Onion Pakoda is one of the easiest snacks that you can make within 15 mins. For  the past few days, it has been raining here in the evening which makes us crave for some hot snack along with tea. And i was just waiting for weekend to make these delicious Onion Pakoda.

Today when i  started to make this pakoda, it had been raining heavily for around  one hour. Due to that, there was no power & the daylight also drastically reduced, so i found it difficult to take the photos but somehow i managed to take a few decent photos.

Though i said it tastes great on rainy day, there is no need to wait for rain to try this. It's simply  delicious with just a cup of hot tea/coffee, so give it a try  and enjoy it with your family today.

Right from childhood, i'm a huge fan of Onion Pakoda. Back in days, in our home town(tirunelveli) , people used to buy onion pakoda  in the evening (a lot of small shops make it fresh every day)to have it as side dish for the rice in the night because mostly side dishes prepared for the lunch would be gone.

Hence i like onion pakoda as snacks as well as side dishes for rice. There are days when i don't know what to cook for dinner or eat out for lunch that day, then i would probably make rice with rasam and pakoda. Ever since i started making this combo , ST also kind of like it and a few days back , he mentioned that it's been a while since i made this combo :-)

Also, i remember one instance when we talk about pakoda, when i was around 8 or 9 years old, we were in Villupuram and i had a tooth decay and it started to hurt so we(me and appa) went to the doctor for an examination in the lunch break.

The doctor said that she had seen a lot of tooth decay earlier in life especially for South Tamilnadu people because of their diet including a lot of deep fried snacks like pakoda, murukku in day to day life :-) Somehow I still remember that remark till now !

Ok, enough with the stories, now let's check out on how to make onion pakoda.

The below pic was taken back in 2015 when we were in Bangalore. While updating the new pictures in the post, this picture brings back a lot of beautiful memories so leave it as it is :-)

Ingredients

Gram Flour/Besan - 1/2 cup
Rice Flour - 1/3 cup
Onion - 2 small size
Turmeric Powder - 1/8 tsp
Red Chili Powder - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - a few
Garlic - 2 crushed.
Salt  - to taste
Baking Soda - a pinch
Water - 2 to 3 tbsp
Oil for frying
Onion Pakoda
Procedure

Slice the onions roughly . In a bowl, add  the gram flour, rice flour, turmeric, chili powder, baking soda and salt . Mix it well.

Then add onions, garlic and curry leaves into gram flour mixture and mix well. The water in the onions helps to bind the flour together and you may need only a  few tbsp of water extra.
I added around 2 tbsp of water to bind the flour as shown in the below picture.

Heat the oil in a kadai, take small portion of mixture and drop it in oil. No need to make any regular shape. Just pinch the mixture & drop it in oil.

Keep the flame in  medium.Flip the pakodas in between to cook both sides evenly.Cook until it become crispy and drain it on tissue paper.
Delicious Onion Pakoda is ready. Serve it wit hot coffee /tea.

Notes:

  • Cook it in medium flame,  it helps to caramalize the onions & give the slight sweet taste  to the pakoda.
  • If you wish, you can green chili.
