Aval with palm jaggery | Aval Nanaichathu

First of all, wish you all a very happy tamil year.Since, Tamil New Year is tomorrow, i would like to share the authentic recipe "Aval Nanaichathu" we used to make on that particular day.

So every year in our home, on Tamil New year morning,we make this aval , along with breakfast(mostly idly, sambar, chutney) and offer that to god before eating breakfast. And then  we prepare delicious banana leaf meal for lunch with vada & payasam.

But in my in-laws place, they celebrate similar to vishu festival celebration. In a plate, all fruits ,money & jewels are arranged along with the mirror on the previous night itself in front of pooja room and it is viewed in the morning to signify as auspicious start of the new year.

Now we celebrate  in both ways :-) So i thought this is the right time to share this aval recipe. It's very easy to prepare & also delicious. Amma makes this little extra on morning, we had it along with breakfast and the remaining we had it in evening along with tea. Even you can make this evening snacks for kids.

Ingredients

Thick Aval - 1/2 cup heaped
Palm Jaggery(Karupatti) - 1/2 cup
Moong Dal - 1 1/2 tbsp
Black Sesame seed - 1 tsp
Grated Coconut - 2 tbsp
Cardamom - 1
Water - 3/4 cup

Procedure

First crush the palm jaggery into small pieces. Heat the water in a kadai, add the palm jaggery and allow it to dissolve completely.

Once it dissolved, filter it , to remove the impurities. Then in a other small kadai, dry roast the moong dal & sesame seed, until nice aroma comes.

Now add that into jaggery syrup and put it in flame . Then add the aval & crushed cardamom and allow it to cook .

Once the aval is cooked, all  the water is absorbed, at this stage, add the coconut, mix well. Keep it in flame for 2-3 mins & switch off.

Very Tasty Aval is ready.

Note

  • If you're using thin variety, no need to add it in direct flame. Make the syrup & switch off the flame and then add aval slowly & mix it well. The heat from the syrup is enough to cook
  • If you're using thin variety, use 3/4 cup water for 1 cup aval.
  • If you wish , you can add roasted nuts. But as it is, it tastes great, so i didnt add.
